Copyrights & Performing Rights Policies

AndArt Music believes that “music” is not simply notes on staves printed on elegantly bound paper that sits on a shelf in someone’s music library.

“Music” is about composers conceiving pleasing sounds and noting them down in a way that allows the composer and/or other instrumentalists, singers and conductors to (re-)create those sounds so that audiences may have the pleasure of hearing those sounds, too.

The copyrights and performing rights policies of AndArt Music are intended to make it easy for performers to (re)produce the “music” creations of composers by minimising restrictions on obtaining and using the printed pages, which are merely mute intermediaries in the creation and enjoyment of music.

To this end, AndArt Music’s policy is to assign a Creative Commons License CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 to its music scores.   The full legal details of that license can be found on the Creative Commons website https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/.   But in summary, that license allows anyone to download scores and print them off free of any copyright charges, PROVIDED that:

  • references identifying the composer of the music are not removed;
  • the music isn’t altered in any significant way (derivatives – eg: changing the instrumentation);
  • the music isn’t used for commercial purposes.

Note that using the music for commercial purposes includes (but is not limited to):

  • public performances where admission is by paid ticket;
  • broadcasts by radio, TV or internet;
  • recordings for commercial distribution;
  • printing the music to be sold on to others at a profit.

Anyone wishing to use any of the music published by AndArt Music for commercial purposes MUST FIRST obtain written permission to do so from AndArt Music.   That can most easily be done by e-mail to This email address is being protected from spambots. However, AndArt Music recognises that the whole point of published sheet music is to enable performances of the music, including those which enable professional musicians to earn a living.

So the public performance of music published by AndArt Music is allowed PROVIDED that such performances are subject to a Performing Rights Society licence (or the equivalent in the country where the music is being performed).   The full legal details of a Performing Rights Society license (TheMusicLicence) can be found at: https://www.prsformusic.com/licences
